SPY and QQQ Price Action: October 8, 2026 Market Recap

Thursday gave a clean split. SPY and QQQ both gapped lower and both finished lower, yet they ended in very different places relative to the levels built over the last few days. One index held the shared zone. The other went through it.

SPY: down 0.42%, zone intact

SPY opened at 774.86, which was a gap down of 2.36 from Wednesday’s close of 777.22. The high was 777.09 and the low was 770.44, a range of 6.66. It closed at 773.93, down 3.29 on the day, with volume around 40 million.

Two details matter. First, the 777.09 high poked above Monday’s high of 776.61, but the close landed well under it. A push above a prior high that does not hold into the close is a failed poke, and it is worth marking. On this day, price above Monday’s high was not accepted.

Second, the low of 770.44 stopped about 0.8 above two nearby reference points: Monday’s low of 769.63 and Friday October 2’s close of 769.64. Those two prints sit almost on top of each other, so they form one zone. Price came within a dollar of it and did not touch. The zone held.

The close at 773.93 sat about 52% of the way up the day’s range, and 0.93 below the open. It also finished under Monday’s close of 774.83. SPY ended inside the band between the Monday/Friday zone below and Monday’s high above.

QQQ: down 1.34%, zone broken

QQQ opened at 753.97, a gap down of 3.76 from Wednesday’s close of 757.73. The high was 757.18. The low was 743.23, and the day closed at 747.58, down 10.15. Volume was around 50 million, compared with roughly 25 million on each of the prior two sessions.

That low of 743.23 went below Monday’s low of 749.08 and also below Friday October 2’s low of 747.53. This is the same zone SPY respected, and QQQ went through it. The close then came back to 747.58, just 0.05 above Friday’s low. QQQ traded under the level and finished almost exactly on it.

The range was 13.95, and the close sat about 31% of the way up that range, 6.39 below the open. It was the widest daily range for QQQ since September 21. It also followed a quiet stretch: on October 6 the QQQ range was only 3.76. Going from 3.76 to 13.95, with volume nearly doubling, is range expansion. The close of 747.58 is also below Friday’s close of 749.58 and is the lowest close since October 1, when QQQ finished at 742.03.

The divergence

Put the two side by side. SPY fell 0.42% and kept its distance from the Friday/Monday zone. QQQ fell 1.34% and went under the same zone. On a day when both gapped lower, only one of them lost the level. The chart gives no reason, and none is offered here. It gives a difference in how the two indexes finished relative to the same area, and that difference is information.

Why 747.53 is now a decision point

A close 0.05 above a prior low is as close to the line as a session can end. Friday’s low at 747.53 was support until Thursday. Price traded through it, and by the close it was sitting right on it. From here a level-based trader has two broad frames to work with, and neither one requires a prediction.

The first is acceptance below. That would mean QQQ trades under 747.53 and holds there, with closes that stay beneath it and rallies that stall at or under the level.

The second is a reclaim. That would mean price moves back above 747.53 and stays above it, with the break below looking, in hindsight, like a probe that found no follow-through. Monday’s low of 749.08 and Friday’s close of 749.58 sit just overhead.

Which one plays out is not knowable from Thursday’s chart. What is knowable is where the line is, and that the market ended the day sitting on it. A trader who has marked 747.53 in advance can wait to see how price behaves around it instead of reacting to the first move in either direction.

What to watch Friday, October 9

The calendar is light. The scheduled items for Friday, all in Eastern time: the preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment reading at 10:00am (forecast 47.5, previous 47.8), preliminary UoM Inflation Expectations at 10:00am (previous 4.6%, no forecast), and Collins speaking at 4:00pm. Those are forecasts and prior readings only.

For QQQ, watch 747.53 first. Notice whether price spends time below it or climbs back over it, and whether the move comes with the heavier volume seen Thursday or fades back toward the roughly 25 million of the prior two sessions. Thursday’s low of 743.23 is the reference below.

For SPY, the zone around 769.63 to 769.64 is the line that held. The failed poke level at Monday’s high of 776.61 sits at the top of the band. Thursday’s low of 770.44 is the nearer reference underneath.

The takeaway

Thursday was a day about levels. SPY tested the area and did not reach it. QQQ went through the area and closed on the edge of it. Draw the lines and let the next sessions show whether the break holds or gets reclaimed. No outcome is promised here, and trading carries risk of loss.
