SPY and QQQ Price Action: October 12, 2026 Market Recap
Monday, October 12 gave us two very different candles from two indexes that usually travel together. SPY finished at 778.10, down 0.47 (-0.06%). QQQ finished at 746.04, down 5.23 (-0.70%). This recap sticks to the bars themselves: where each index opened, where it stopped, and where it closed relative to levels already on the chart. Data is from Yahoo Finance, settled close.
SPY: the smallest bar of the last six sessions
SPY opened at 778.78, which was 0.21 above Friday’s close of 778.57. It printed a high of 779.40 and a low of 777.05, then closed at 778.10. That is a range of 2.35, and the close sits 0.68 below the open, about 45% of the way up the day’s range.
The range is the story. Here are the daily ranges for the prior five sessions: October 5 was 6.98, October 6 was 3.66, October 7 was 5.49, October 8 was 6.66, and October 9 was 4.28. Those average out to roughly 5.41. Monday’s 2.35 is less than half of that average and the narrowest of the six bars.
The edges of that small bar line up with levels that were already drawn. The high of 779.40 stopped 0.02 below Friday’s high of 779.42. Two cents. The low of 777.05 stopped 0.04 below Thursday’s high of 777.09, which is the level SPY closed above on Friday. So the whole day was spent between a ceiling that was almost touched and a floor that was only barely pierced.
QQQ: opened at the high, closed near the low
QQQ looked nothing like that. It closed Friday at 751.27 and opened Monday at 749.69, a gap down of 1.58. The open was within 0.10 of the day’s high of 749.79. The low was 744.85, so the range was 4.94, and the close at 746.04 landed 3.65 below the open, only about 24% of the way up the range. That is a bar that closes close to its low.
Relative to the prior structure, the low of 744.85 stayed 1.62 above Thursday’s low of 743.23, so that level was not tested. The close of 746.04 is below Thursday’s close of 747.58, and it is the lowest close since October 1, when QQQ closed at 742.03. I am not making any claim about what came before October 1.
The divergence, stated plainly
SPY lost 0.06% while QQQ lost 0.70%. One index held a tight range near the top of its recent bars. The other gapped lower and finished near its lows. I am not going to assign a reason to that gap between them. A price-action read does not need one. The two charts are different shapes today, and that is a fact you can mark on your screen.
How a price-action trader reads a small bar after wide ones
A 2.35 range following ranges of 4 to 7 is compression. That word describes what already happened: the high-to-low distance shrank. It says nothing about the next bar.
What a small bar does give you is cleaner information about location. When a day trades inside a couple of dollars, the places where it stopped matter more, because there is less noise around them. SPY stopping two cents under Friday’s high is a clear rejection of a specific, known price. SPY holding within four cents of Thursday’s high is a clear reaction to a second known price. Both levels were on the chart before Monday began.
Levels on the board
For SPY, the upper reference is 779.42, Friday’s high, with Monday’s 779.40 sitting just under it. The lower reference is 777.09, Thursday’s high, with Monday’s low of 777.05 just beneath it. The close of 778.10 is 1.32 from the upper level and 1.01 from the lower one, so the market is parked between two lines that are only 2.33 apart.
For QQQ, the upper reference is 751.27, Friday’s close and the level it gapped away from. The lower reference is 743.23, Thursday’s low, which Monday did not reach. The close of 746.04 is 5.23 from the first and 2.81 from the second.
Look-ahead: forecasts and prior readings only
Monday’s calendar listed Columbus Day (bond market closed, U.S. stock exchanges open) and a Hammack speech at 12:10pm ET; I am not linking either to the chart. Look-ahead times are ET. Tuesday, October 13 looks like the lighter calendar of the two days. Waller is scheduled at 3:45am. The 6:00am NFIB Small Business Index has a forecast of 98.1 against a previous reading of 98.7. The 8:15am ADP Weekly Employment Change has a previous reading of 23.8K. Existing Home Sales at 10:00am show a forecast of 3.95M against a previous 3.98M. Barkin is scheduled at 1:00pm and Collins at 4:00pm.
Wednesday, October 14 is heavier. Bowman is scheduled at 5:40am. At 8:30am, CPI m/m has a forecast of 0.6% against a previous 0.4%, CPI y/y has a forecast of 3.6% against a previous 3.4%, and Core CPI m/m has a forecast of 0.2% against a previous 0.3%. The Beige Book is scheduled for 2:00pm. Those are forecasts and prior readings only. Decide beforehand which levels you care about and where you are wrong; Wednesday is a bar to respect, and nothing here predicts it. Trading involves risk.
